You made it!! Whether your school is on semesters or trimesters, you are coming to the end of another fun and anxiety filled year. Did you graduate? Congrats! Now you get to join the rest of us in pounding the pavement to find gainful employment. I mean, those loans have to get paid back somehow!
If you are on summer break, you are probably going to begin that all important summer job. Whether it's slinging burgers at your local burger joint, or helping little tykes learn to make tissue paper butterflies at summer camp, these all have a means to an end. Years from now, whether you remember these days with fondness or wince every time they're mentioned your summer job had its place in your life and added a notch or two to your character.
You can also take solace in the fact that you will NOT be defined by the part time job you have in high school or college. Need convincing? Take a look at some of these powerful people and where they started their careers.
General Colin Powell did not start out a diplomat. He started out working in a baby furniture store. He also learned Yiddish because that is what was preferable to his bosses! [source] Financier Warren Buffet started out in his father's grocery store, but worked his way up to a clerk at J.C. Penney.[source]
There are some powerful women who also had humble beginnings. Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright sold bras at Jocelyn's Department Store in Denver the summer between her junior and senior year of high school. [source] Condeleeza Rice gave piano lessons. [source]
So, as you scoop out that ice cream, or mop floors this summer, remember, that this too shall pass, and NO job is too small. All money is green, and it will build the character you will need to take on the important jobs of the future.

Leaders throughout history have conquered adversity and struggled to overcome obstacles to become the great people we know them as today. We all can learn from their stories how they used their decision making skills and leadership abilities to succeed, and in turn develop our own effective leadership strategies to deal with adversity in society today. Remember, history happens when you least expect it!
